### Professional career

- Distinguished jurist who held the role of Chief Judge of the South Georgia Judicial Circuit in Georgia for over three decades, retiring in 2016 after more than 38 years on the bench
- Resigned as DA and was appointed Superior Court Judge for the South Georgia Judicial Circuit (1978)

- He received the Emory Findley Award for Outstanding Judicial Service in 2016.
- 1982–2016: Became Chief Judge in 1982 after the retirement of Judge Robert Culpepper Jr., holding that position until his retirement
- He also held the role of Administrative Judge for the Second Judicial Administrative District (1986–1988 and 2002–2006) and was a member of the Council of Superior Court Judges, later becoming its President
- He was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1963
- Born February 6, 1938 in Decatur County, Georgia, Cato grew up in Bainbridge and attended Bainbridge High School before earning his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Georgia.
- Cato was known for his exemplary, effective, and judicious service over more than 50 years in legal and judicial roles.
- The Bainbridge-Decatur County Bar Association honored him for his “personal, professional and judicial insight, respect, devotion and dedication”
