## Biography

### Professional career

- Daniel Lionel Herrmann (June 10, 1913 – June 2, 1991) was an American jurist, lawyer, and community leader who held the role of Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court from 1964 to 1973 and as Chief Justice from 1973 to 1985, known for his judicial reform efforts and as the first Jewish judge in Delaware
- On August 9, 1973, Governor Sherman W. Tribbitt nominated him to succeed Daniel F. Wolcott as Chief Justice
- Joined the Delaware Supreme Court in 1964 by Governor Charles L. Terry Jr., serving as a justice until 1973
- In 1951, Governor Elbert N. Carvel appointed him to the Delaware Superior Court, a role he held until 1958, when he resigned to return to private practice
- After passing the bar, Herrmann worked for Wilmington attorney Steward Lynch until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942, where he held the role of a major
- He subsequently became a partner in Herrmann, Bayard, Brill & Russell

### Additional information

- Served in that role until his retirement on July 31, 1985
- Post–World War II, he was Assistant U.S. Attorney for Delaware for three years
- representing Delaware in major projects such as the Interstate 95 property acquisition
- The neoclassical Delaware Courthouse in Wilmington bears his name in recognition of his service
