### Professional career

- Daniel Moore Bates (1821–1879) was an American lawyer, politician, and judge best known for serving as Chancellor of Delaware from 1873 until his death, as well as U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware from 1855 to 1861

- After the war, he was unanimously chosen as Chancellor of Delaware in 1873, a role he held until his death in 1879.
- In early 1861, he held the role of one of Delaware’s commissioners at the Peace Conference attempting to avert the Civil War
- In 1843, he co‐founded the State Colonization Society of Delaware, promoting the repatriation of African Americans to Africa
- Bates was admitted to the Delaware bar in 1842, starting in his father’s law firm.
- As chancellor, he focused on organizing equity work, ensuring accessibility of decisions, and maintaining institutional continuity
- Bates is remembered for his steady, process‐oriented leadership in both federal and state legal roles, his involvement in pre‐Civil War peace efforts, and his long tenure as Delaware’s chancellor, which shaped the state’s equity legal system.
