## Biography

### Professional career

- David Richard Herndon is a retired U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Illinois, serving from 1998 until his retirement in 2019, and Chief Judge from 2007 to 2014
- Associate Judge on the Illinois Third Judicial Circuit (1977–1991, Herndon practiced law privately, specializing in plaintiff’s personal injury cases and FELA (Federal Employers’ Liability Act) litigation From 1991 to 1998)
- Herndon is recognized for his extensive trial law background, his leadership as Chief Judge, and his ongoing contributions to mass tort and arbitration work
