Scope: statewide

Electronic media and still-photography coverage is allowed in Florida public trial and appellate proceedings under Rule 2.450's equipment and conduct standards, always subject to the presiding judge's control of decorum, distractions, and fair administration.

Evidence excerpt: Subject at all times to the authority of the presiding judge to: (i) control the conduct of proceedings before the court; (ii) ensure decorum and prevent distractions; and (iii) ensure the fair administration of justice in the pending cause, electronic media and still photography coverage of public judicial proceedings in the appellate and trial courts of this state shall be allowed

### Professional career

- Judge Derek Lewis, a lifelong Floridian, was appointed to the Monroe County Court bench in 2025 by Governor Ron DeSantis, filling the vacancy created by the elevation of Judge James Morgan to the circuit court
- Derek Lewis is a judge on the Monroe County Court in Florida

- He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida and his law degree from Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad College of Law in Davie, Florida Before taking the bench, Lewis served as an Assistant State Attorney in the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit, where he handled serious criminal cases, including homicide-level offenses
- As a judge, Lewis oversees a wide range of cases in the Marathon Division, including circuit criminal, county criminal, county civil, small claims, municipal, and traffic matters
- He is also active in professional and community organizations, serving on the 16th Judicial Circuit’s Professionalism Committee, participating in voluntary bar associations such as the Inns of Court and the Bench and Bar Committee, and being a member of the Rotary Club
