## Biography

### Professional career

- The first Black woman and first Oberlin resident to serve as Oberlin Municipal Court Judge, elected in November 2025 and taking office January 1, 2026
- Emeka has emphasized a compassionate, fair, and principled approach to justice, aiming to make the law serve people rather than intimidate them
- The sole judge of the court, serving a six‐year term

### Additional information

- Graduate of Oberlin College (Class of 1997) and an Africana Studies minor
- Before becoming judge, Emeka was Chief Prosecutor and Assistant Law Director for the City of Oberlin and served in multiple jurisdictions.
- The Oberlin Municipal Court is a single‐judge court covering much of western Lorain County, including Oberlin
- She has over 20 years of legal experience in areas such as probate, family law, and civil litigation, and was managing attorney in the family law division of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.
- She has expressed interest in creating a specialized docket for substance use and mental health cases to divert individuals from the criminal justice system into treatment.
