- After his father’s death in 1832, Johns was appointed Chancellor of Delaware, a role he held until his own death in 1857.
- He studied classical subjects and completed studies at Princeton College in 1810, then trained in law with his uncle Nicholas Van Dyke and at the Litchfield Law School, earning admission to the Delaware Bar in 1813
- In this capacity, he presided over the Court of Chancery, a historic equity court in Delaware.
