### Professional career

- American attorney, veteran, and current Associate Justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court, appointed by Governor Dennis Daugaard in 2018
- After a Minnesota Third Judicial District clerkship in 1993, he served in the Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps during 1994–1997 as prosecutor and defense counsel.
- Following law school, Salter held the role of a law clerk for the Third Judicial District of Minnesota in Marshall, Minnesota in 1993
- Practiced at Cutler & Donahoe in Sioux Falls, became partner, and served one year as Turner County deputy state’s attorney

- University of South Dakota School of Law in — J.D. (1993)
- A Huron native, he obtained a South Dakota State University BS in 1990 and University of South Dakota JD in 1993.

- Appointed to the South Dakota Supreme Court by Governor Dennis Daugaard on May 24, 2018, and sworn in July 9, 2018, succeeding Glen Severson.
