## Biography

### Professional career

- Before joining the court, she was a full-time professor in the Department of Justice, Law, and Criminology at American University, later serving as an adjunct associate professor until May 2023
- Began her court career in 1996 as a law clerk to Judges Michael Rankin and Stephanie Duncan-Peters

### Education

- Columbus School of Law, Catholic University of America — J.D. (1995)
- BA, MS, PhD from American University (1993) — dissertation on incarceration’s impact on father–child relationships

### Additional information

- Presiding Judge of the Criminal Division since her confirmation as Associate Judge on August 1, 2019, after being nominated by President Donald Trump in 2017 and 2019 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate
- First appointed as a Magistrate Judge in November 2012 and later became Deputy Presiding Magistrate Judge
- In 1998, she became Special Counsel to the Chief Judge, serving three successive chief judges, and also acted as ombudsman for prisoner/correctional issues
- Born in LaGrange, Georgia in 1966, Brandt earned
- Judge Brandt has received multiple teaching awards, including the Outstanding Adjunct Professor Award three times, and the Justice Potter Stewart Award from the Council for Court Excellence for her contributions to justice administration
