## Biography

### Professional career

- Randy James Holland (1947 – 2022) was a distinguished justice of the Delaware Supreme Court, appointed in 1986 as the youngest person to serve on the court, and later the longest‐serving justice in Delaware history
- In 2009, he became the longest‐serving justice in Delaware history, and in 2011 he was reappointed for an unprecedented third 12‐year term
- Appointed by Governor Mike Castle in 1986, he became the youngest Delaware Supreme Court justice
- He later joined Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati as senior counsel in Wilmington
- Before joining the court, Holland was a partner at Morris, Nichols, Arsht & Tunnell in Georgetown, Delaware.

### Education

- He obtained a BA in economics from Swarthmore College (1969) and graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, receiving the Henry C. Loughlin Award for Legal Ethics.
- He also earned an LL.M. in the Judicial Process from the University of Virginia Law School

### Additional information

- In February 2017, Holland announced his retirement, effective March 23, 2017.
- Born January 27, 1947 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Holland grew up in Milford, Delaware, where he was captain of the football team and a catcher on the baseball team at Milford High School.
- His career combined legal scholarship, judicial service, and public service, leaving a lasting mark on Delaware’s legal system
- Holland served on numerous professional bodies, including the American Inns of Court Foundation, American Law Institute, and ABA Appellate Committee
- Justice Holland received multiple awards, including the American Inns of Court Powell Award for Professionalism and Ethics and the First State Distinguished Service Award.
