### Professional career

- Judge Robert L. Morton (1934 – 2020) was a retired Kansas municipal judge and U.S. Navy veteran, remembered for his long service in public office and his contributions to the legal community
- There is also a Judge Robert B. Morton (1912–?), a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge and former president of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, whose career is documented in the National Bankruptcy Archives

- Judge Morton passed away August 20, 2020 in Emporia, Kansas, at age 86, after battling COVID-19.
- After teaching high school in Wamego, Kansas, for seven years, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving until 1966
- This is a different individual from Robert L. Morton, though both share the surname and judicial background
- Following his military service, Morton practiced law privately for several years before being appointed Municipal Judge by the Governor of Kansas.
- His judicial work was marked by dedication to community service and fair adjudication
- He held the role of municipal judge in Emporia and Americus for 31 years.
