- Judge, Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, 1997-present
- He became senior associate justice in 2008 and was appointed Chief Justice by Governor Deval Patrick in 2010, serving until his retirement in 2014
- The first African American to sit on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in its then over three-hundred year history when he was appointed an Associate Justice to that bench in 1997, later becoming its Chief Justice in 2010
- In 1997, Governor William Weld appointed him as an Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, making him the first African American to serve on that court
- Roderick L. Ireland was born on December 3, 1944, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Helen Garner Ireland, an elementary school teacher, and George Lovelace Ireland, a house painter
