### Professional career

- Judge William Henry “Bill” Williams (1922 – 2001) was a distinguished Washington State Supreme Court Chief Justice, former Spokane County Superior Court judge, WWII pilot, and University of Idaho football star
- He became Chief Justice in 1982 and retired in 1985
- He then served 22 years as a Spokane County Superior Court judge, a role that gave him deep roots in Eastern Washington’s judicial system
- After law school, he served as a Spokane County deputy prosecuting attorney and in private practice.

- In 1977, Williams ran for the Washington State Supreme Court bench and was elected — a rare case among Eastern Washington judges, as most were appointed rather than elected.
- Known for his legal acumen, community service, and athletic background, Williams is remembered as one of the most respected judges in Washington’s history.
- Williams held the role of a U.S. Army Air Forces pilot during World War II
- Even after retirement, he acted as a pro tem judge and held the role of a senior consultant for the law firm Dean, Keane, Smith and Hemmingway
- His career spanned military service, local judiciary, and the state’s highest court, leaving a lasting impact on Eastern Washington’s legal landscape
