• James Alan Gell, born June 30, 1974, in North Carolina, was 22 when he was convicted of murdering Allen Ray Jenkins in Bertie County, NC, on April 3, 1995.
• Gell’s case led to a North Carolina law requiring prosecutors to share their entire case file with defendants in felony cases.
• The prosecution’s case relied heavily on the testimony of two 15‐year‐old girls, who claimed they had plotted a robbery that went wrong and that Gell killed Jenkins.
• In exchange for their testimony, both pleaded guilty to second‐degree murder and received ten‐year sentences
• He has since been active in the anti‐death penalty movement and has spoken publicly about wrongful convictions
