Commission narrative

The Eighteenth Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance agrees by a vote of 7-0, with one member abstaining, one member absent, and one vacancy on the Commission, that Judge Darren L. Vahle MEETS PERFORMANCE STANDARDS . The Colorado statutory judicial performance criteria are integrity, legal knowledge, communication skills, judicial temperament, administrative performance and service to the legal profession and to the public.

After meeting with Judge Vahle, reviewing his work over the last six years, and assessing feedback from attorneys and non-attorneys, the Commission agreed that Judge Vahle meets judicial performance standards. His work presiding over a criminal district court docket received praise for his demeanor, prompt decisions, knowledge of the law, fairness, diligence and case management. The Judge was described as smart, understanding the law, and managing caseloads effectively, as well as being calm, fair, diligent, courteous and a team player. At times Judge Vahle can be critical and make undue comments, but he assured the Commission that his aim is not to be critical but to maintain a high standard in the court; he takes his values and the consideration of others as foremost. The Commission concluded that Judge Vahle’s knowledge base is well above average, that he is a trusted peer, and a key pillar for many.

The Commission conducted personal interviews with Judge Vahle, reviewed rulings he authored, observed him in court, reviewed comments from interested parties during the evaluation, and reviewed survey responses from attorneys and non-attorneys who had experience with Judge Vahle. Attorney and non-attorney respondents, although low in response numbers, found no performance issues in any area. Most of the Commission found this to be similar to past evaluations.

Judge Vahle was appointed to the County Court bench by Governor William Ritter in June 2008 and to the District Court bench by Governor John Hickenlooper in July 2018. He was raised in Arapahoe County and graduated from Arapahoe High School. He graduated cum laude from Westmont College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. Following graduation, he worked at a juvenile detention center and at the Denver Children’s Home before enrolling at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. He graduated a semester early in the top 10 percent of his class and went to work for the District Attorney’s office in the18th Judicial District. Judge Vahle volunteers in his community coaching varsity boys’ volleyball at Littleton Public Schools, as well as for a local volleyball club during their fall season. He serves his church playing drums on the worship team and serves on the church’s security team. Judge Vahle is a regular blood and platelet donor and is also a blood drive coordinator. He has been a volunteer judge for the Arapahoe County High School mock trial competition for over 15 years.
